Born in Kanpur on February 20, 1976, their son Rohan was also a cricket player and represented India in 11 One Day Internationals, but he was unable to secure a spot in the team because of unconsistent performance. His sister Kavita Viswanath is married to a former Indian  cricketer Gundappa Viswanath.

Gavaskar has written his autobiography named as,  “Sunny Days” where he has told that he was exchanged with a fisherman’s baby at birth. It was his uncle who spotted that the child was not Sunil as he had a birthmark near his ear. Gavaskar was a very friendly and fun loving person.
